Ramez Younis, DMD
Dental Director
Hamilton Health Center
What originally sparked your interest in oral health?
I always wanted to work in healthcare, but it wasn’t until college that I realized dentistry was the right fit for me. I liked that it combined science with hands-on work. What inspired me most was how oral health impacts not just teeth, but a person’s overall well-being, confidence, and quality of life.
How did you become involved with PCOH?
I was first introduced to PCOH and its incredible team through the PA Association of Community Health Centers' conference, and later had the opportunity to attend their summit. I was very impressed by PCOH’s ability to bring together leaders from across the oral health landscape—government agencies, FQHCs, private practices, insurance companies, and more—to engage in meaningful discussions that drive real change for communities across Pennsylvania.
What is the most challenging part of your work in oral health?
Directing a dental department in a federally qualified health center setting is a rewarding yet costly endeavor. At the same time, we’re constantly navigating social and insurance-related barriers that limit patients’ ability to access care. Part of our role is helping them through those hurdles and finding ways to keep them engaged in their own health. Overcoming these challenges requires creativity, collaboration, and a mission-driven mindset.
If you could see one oral health goal reached, what would it be?
Improving Medicaid reimbursement rates, expanding coverage for children and adults, and streamlining preauthorization and BLE requirements would increase access to care and lead to stronger population health outcomes. By addressing oral health needs early, these changes could reduce long-term healthcare costs, lower emergency room utilization, and enhance chronic disease management. It’s a complex policy challenge, but one worth pursuing.
What keeps you motivated?
What drives me is the opportunity to lead positive change in oral
health—especially by working at Hamilton Health Center and alongside passionate colleagues and organizations like PCOH, who care deeply about access, equity, and quality.
I recharge by:
Like many others, I’m working to find the balance between leaving work at work and making space for myself. I’ve lived in Pennsylvania for a few years now, but since I’m not originally from here, I try to make the most of my time off by exploring the state—especially when the weather’s good. If you’re reading this and have any favorite spots or recommendations,
feel free to send them my way.
Thank you to Ramez Younis, DMD for contributing to the oral health movement!
