Dr. Joan Gluch
Professor of Clinical Community Oral Health
Penn Dental Medicine
What originally sparked your interest in oral health?
As a child, I thought dental offices would be an interesting place to work because I was so curious about dental instruments and procedures. During dental hygiene school, I realized the importance of prevention and how many people lacked access to basic dental care, and it became an important social justice issue to me to increase access to oral health care.
How did you become involved with PCOH?
After I attended the first PCOH Summit, I realized the power of advocacy organizations to facilitate change in access to oral health care and became a regular at PCOH meetings and summits. In 2022, I joined the PCOH Board of Directors and am proud to work with the talented professionals who lead this amazing organization.
What is the most challenging part of your work in oral health?
Being persistent, optimistic, and focused on our goals despite the many challenges and setbacks, especially in the state budgetary process.
If you could see one oral health goal reached, what would it be?
Dental care funded at parity with other health care procedures, with universal dental and health care coverage for everyone.
What keeps you motivated?
I believe our work has made a difference, and I am inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the PCOH stakeholders, board members, and staff to continue our efforts to achieve success.
I recharge by:
Spending time with family and friends, especially at the shore, gardening and reading.
Thank you to Dr. Joan Gluch for contributing to the oral health movement!
