Angela Zaino-Hallock
Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner
Maternal & Family Health Services (MFHS)
What originally sparked your interest in oral health?
Right out of high school, I completed a dental assisting certificate program and began working in the dental field. After gaining a few years of experience as a dental assistant, I developed an even stronger interest in oral health and patient care. That experience inspired me to continue my education and pursue a career as a dental hygienist, where I could play a more active role in helping patients maintain healthy smiles and improve their overall well-being.
How did you become involved with PCOH?
After starting at MFHS, I was looking for resources that could help me better navigate medical assistance and connect patients with the support they needed. That’s when I became involved with PCOH. Helen was always just a Zoom call or email away. I’m so grateful for the support she provided and for the resources PCOH offers to help us better serve our patients.
What is the most challenging part of your work in oral health?
Working in public health has opened my eyes. The most challenging part is seeing patients who need dental care but have trouble accessing it. We do as much dental work as we can for our patients at MFHS, but it’s hard when they need care beyond what we can provide, such as oral surgery. I try to help connect them with resources whenever I can.
If you could see one oral health goal reached, what would it be?
If I could see one oral health goal reached, it would be better access to dental care for underserved populations. Too many patients, especially those on medical assistance, are waiting months or longer to be seen, sometimes while they’re in pain. I’d love to see patients have access to the care they need when they need it, instead of having to wait until their situation
becomes an emergency.
What keeps you motivated?
I truly believe that giving someone the ability to smile can change the trajectory of their life. If I can help someone feel confident in their smile, it can give them a whole new sense of confidence in themselves. Knowing that I can make that kind of difference for someone is what keeps me motivated.
I recharge by:
Family will always be my number one. I also love staying active, it’s a big part of my routine. I work out most mornings before work and try to get a walk in on my lunch break. It’s a great way to clear my head and recharge.
